There are many approaches to kitchen remodeling; it could be something as simple as upgrading kitchen appliances or as elaborate as a complete renovation. If you’re not sure which kind of remodel you will need to do, here are some of our planning guidelines.
Think About Your Needs
Nobody knows your kitchen more than you do, so whatever changes you need to make should cater to your needs. Ask yourself if there’s anything that you want to change with how you use your kitchen, such as the footprint, layout or your current set of appliances. Organize your notes, clippings and sketches in an idea notebook so everything is within reach for the next step.
Plan and Research
At this point, you should have an idea of the scope of your project. Start looking at the potential costs as well as what options are available. Research materials and brands that you would like to have in your kitchen. You should also consider consulting with a kitchen contractor at this stage so you can get immediate feedback as well as a quotation.
Plan a Temporary Kitchen
Remember that your kitchen will be out of commission during remodeling, so you should plan a temporary kitchen that will be used in the meantime. Set up a long table in the garage, on your deck or anywhere with enough ventilation and away from your kitchen. A long table would work both as a prep station and makeshift cooktop.
You won’t be able to use most of your appliances at this time. So, use alternatives, such as a covered grill, in lieu of your oven, or cook with a portable cooktop instead of your main one. You won’t be able to use your dishwasher, so stock up on paper plates and utensils. Once you have all of these aspects planned for, all you will need to do is to finalize your kitchen remodeling plans and get it started.
