Got you thinking? Good! The bedroom is one of those personal living spaces that sometimes can create peace and tranquility or restless and sleepless nights. Of course, there are many reasons why either of those circumstances develop but if your bedroom isn’t comfortable, it’s likely you’ll wake feeling just a bit off each morning.
Sometimes a remodel is necessary to help create the space and desired atmosphere. Other times a few simple elements can change the mood in your bedroom. Let’s take a look at some of the important components that can affect the quality and quantity of sleep you get each night.
Organization. One of the most important aspects to achieving a great night’s sleep is to have a room that’s well organized. The more clutter in your room, the more likely you are to go to bed with a busy, over-worked mind. If you can create space and a clutter-free bedroom, you’ll find you’ll be resting easier at night.
Start by evaluating your bedroom. Are you using your bedroom as an office too? If it’s a rather large area, that might be okay. But if it’s a small bedroom, having the office in it can be a huge distraction. It can cause you to work too late and to literally take your work to bed with you.
If your bedroom is very spacious, you might consider looking into remodeling it to design it so that you can have a separate area for an office nook. This can allow you to close off the work when it’s time for bed. Or you might consider moving your desk out of your bedroom entirely.
These days larger smartphones and smaller tablet computers make it easier to cut the cables, but if your desk space in your bedroom is hardwired with cables to landline phones, printers, and monitors, you’ll likely rest better if you can conceal the technology with some cabinetry like built-in armoires that close off the equipment. Consult with a design-build firm to see what ideas their designers have for your space. They may be able to show you a better location in the house for your bedroom-office desk.
Lighting. There are a few places in your home where lighting is critically important. The kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom. However, the lighting that you need is different for these areas, but one natural light is a big plus in all of these rooms. The natural effect of sunlight offers a positive source of energy throughout the day. It can help to wake you gently from a deep sleep as the sun rises.
On the other hand, manufactured light can be very disruptive when you’re trying to sleep. Aim to make your room as dark as possible when you’re sleeping–(another good reason to get as many electronic devices out of your bedroom or hidden in a closed cabinet). Make sure your home has window coverings that shield the majority of outdoor lights. Some people like to have some light come in so the sunlight wakes them in the early morning.
Smells. You might not think a lot about the smell of your bedroom but if, for instance, your bedroom is located near the kitchen and there are a lot of strong aromatic cooking odors seeping into your room at night, it could be disrupting your sleep.
You can try getting rid of the odors by using lavender and scents that help promote relaxation and sleepiness. You can also air out your room during the day and into the night before you go to bed.
A few simple changes can have you getting better sleep than you have in a long time. However, if you can’t seem to find a way to make your bedroom comfortable, don’t suffer through any more sleepless nights. Consult with the expert remodelers for an opinion on how to make your bedroom more inviting and comfy. It could be that you need some simple renovations or, perhaps, you move your bedroom from its location to another area of the house. Seeking expert advice could lead to better rest at night. Sleep well!
