Three CotY Award-Winning Home Remodels You Have To See
We love making our homeowners happy with their dream remodel or custom-built home, and it’s even better when those homes win awards.
This year, Marrokal Design & Remodeling won three awards from the Southwest Regional Contractor of the Year (CotY) Awards from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI). The CotYs are the first major industry awards program of 2020 and typically act as an indicator for the projects that will top podiums for the rest of the year.
We’re pleased to share with you a look at our award-winning homes:
Residential Kitchen ranging from $60,001 to $100,000
This kitchen transformation went from a closed-in and cramped area with little room for more than one person to prepare and cook food to a larger, brighter, and more inviting kitchen that has room for plenty of cooks.
The Kitchen features a dark grey honed quartz counter along the perimeter perfect for cooking and a honed granite counter to showcase on the island with pops of purple. Our homeowners achieved the ideal balance of mixing natural and man-made materials by incorporating a neutral-colored linear marble backsplash. Dog bowls were built into the island to eliminate the need for setting up a separate space for their pup and were finished with the same granite and marble backsplash as the rest of the Kitchen.

Residential Historical Renovation/ Restoration $250,000 and Over
A Modern Craftsman style home gets a complete renovation and a second-floor addition that turns this diamond in the rough into a shining beauty.
The homeowners have a growing family and wanted more square footage for their Craftsman home, the solution? A Second story.
The existing interior had awkward small spaces, and the homeowners wanted open living areas. They adored the Craftsman aspects of the existing home, so we carefully preserved and enhanced these features while adding space and function in the new design.
We integrated additional square footage into the existing home, but also visually separated the spaces using various wall materials such as siding vs. stucco, and the continuation of existing wood bands.
Working in together with the Historical Review Board, this circa 1912 home’s essence was kept intact through the continuation of characteristics such as deep eaves with exposed wood rafter tails, tapered columns, and geometric designs in the windows.
We opened up the original Kitchen to the family room — making it light and bright. We placed a discrete staircase in a way that did not interfere with the flow of the new great room and also did not obstruct the exterior façade. Oversized casing and baseboard was matched in kind throughout the space, as was the original wood flooring.

Entire House ranging from $250,000 to $500,000
The owners of this home felt that the common areas of their home were very compartmentalized, and they wanted a more open floor plan that emphasized their beautiful backyard view.
To do that, the central fireplace was removed to allow for an entirely open design and a clear line of sight from the main entrance to the backyard, allowing their beautiful view to be visible from all angles. They also wanted the style of the home to reflect furniture pieces and an entry door they had picked up on their travels. We used rich tones and bright accent colors to bring an energetic feel to the home.
