Making your house a home takes skill. It’s the fine balance between personal taste and professional knowledge that can turn a run of the mill house into a spectacular home. Knowing how to incorporate your personality into your decor makes all the difference when achieving a masterfully decorated home. Avoiding common decorating mistakes can help you accomplish this. Marrokal Design & Remodeling reveals the 4 most common decorating dilemmas, while showing the proper alternatives, below.
- Hanging Art Too High Or Too Low
Framed artwork and photos hung too high or too low can alter a room’s
appearance completely, making the walls appear too tall or too short. To create a balanced room, hang art at eye level. In general, this height is 57 inches to the center of the picture or grouping of pictures, which is also the measurement museums and art galleries use.
- Imbalanced Furniture Layout
Balance is the word of the day when it comes to furniture arrangement. Randomly pushing furniture against walls and into corners does not lead to a balanced room. To find the balance lines of the room, you will want to divide the room in half, down the middle. Draw this imaginary line from one wall, over the ceiling to the opposite wall. For 4 walls, you should have two lines that intersect in the center of the room. This imaginary line is the room’s axis. Position major furniture pieces centered on the axis line, such as sofas, beds and tables. The visual weight of the furniture should be the same on the opposite wall for a balanced room. Center the rest of the furniture inside of the remaining quadrants. This should give your room a much more balanced look.
- Insufficient Lighting
Lighting can make or break a room. Lighting is simply the easiest way to add ambiance or to change the appearance of a room. A darkened room can seem small or dirty. A brightly lit space can actually appear larger and cleaner! Don’t be afraid to switch out lighting fixtures to add more light, as well as adding lamps and sconces.
- Appropriately Proportioned Furniture
Furniture size really does matter. Pieces can be too large or too small for a space. Consider the scale of the room, and provide furniture appropriate to the space. Oversized, bulky pieces would not fit well in smaller rooms as a general rule. If you have a large room or a space with high ceilings that make the room appear larger, small pieces of furniture generally would not appear balanced unless you are able to fill the space to be proportionately balanced.
