Fall has officially arrived. The change of season brings pumpkin candles, vibrantly colored foliage and an incentive to complete lingering home upgrades before winter. The bathroom is one of the most used rooms of the house. Due to the smaller scale of the room, it naturally carries a significant impact when renovated. Set aside a weekend and watch the transformation that can occur with just a few updates.
Vanity
The vanity is typically the first to either go or to renovate in a bathroom makeover. Typically, it’s the largest piece of furniture in the bathroom, and many times the first thing you see. When the existing vanity offers a compatible design for the room, nice lines and sturdy construction, update with a fresh coat of paint. Changing the hardware will also update the look entirely. If budget is not an issue, have one custom made. Choose a stone or marble top from the local quarry dealer and have a cast iron base made to fit the measurements of your space. Alternatively, find a console table or antique dresser to convert into a vanity with a sink retrofitted into the top. This can be easily installed by a plumber or through your interior decorator.
Custom Built-ins
Boost cabinet efficiency with custom built-ins. Incorporating pull out shelves to existing cabinets or installing floor to ceiling built-in shelving will maximize the potential of wasted space. Add unique detail to your bathroom with crown molding enclosure framing the tub or mirror. To encase the tub itself with molding will transform an ordinary tub to a luxury custom-designed bath. Stone, tile or beadboard can be used as well on the porcelain portion of the tub.
Update Floor
If builder grade tile adorns the floor, update with new tile or transform with paint. White tiles are a classic complement to any interior, instantly refreshing a space. Accent tiles can be used to create a custom design on the floor or wall. Paint can also be used to bring transformation. Paint the tile a solid color, or create a design with a stencil or pattern. Stripes, diamonds or custom “rug” with intricate designs can be painted to add color and intrigue to a small space. In lieu of paint, a rug can also be used to update the bath. Instead of utilizing the typical bath mat, think outside the box and place a small Persian or kilim style rug for a fresh and modern spin.
