A home can increase in value by having an in-law suite. Does this mean you should consider building one on your property?
What Is an In-Law Suite?
In-law suites are essentially another name for Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) or Granny Flats and, of course, they don’t just have to be for the elderly. They are extended self-sustaining rooms (homes) that can be attached to a single-family home or built separately on the same lot. Whether your in-laws, adult children, or tenants live in them, they’re very useful and can add both value to your property and rental income.
This small housing has its own bedroom, bathroom and other features the occupant needs, which you can customize with the help of a remodeling contractor. In some cases, you can have one ADU and a Junior ADU.
Types of In-Law Suites
- Mother-In-Law Suite
This is the typical layout and design of an in-law suite that focuses on improving accessibility. It has an accessible ramp, walk-in shower and non-slip flooring. - Watch this video about a granny flat we built for a lovely family in Chula Vista.
- Guest House
This type of in-law suite is designed for guests temporarily staying over for the night. You can ask your remodeling services provider to add space for a TV, mini bar and other hotel-style amenities to make the space feel luxurious. - Live-In Nanny Homes
Nannies who live with the family can use the in-law suite as their living quarters. They can live comfortably with an in-unit washer and dryer, personal kitchen and bedroom.
- Rental ADU
You can use in-law suites or ADUs to make passive rental income by providing much-needed housing in San Diego. To do so, you must comply with local government requirements for rental ADUs.
