There are a lot of reasons to invest in home additions, the top reason to create more living space. Home additions can be built vertically or horizontally depending on what is most suitable for your home. Marrokal Design & Remodeling, a premier home remodeling company in the San Diego, explains the key differences between building up and out in.
Building Up
A big concern for homeowners is maximizing your home’s living space without using up your entire backyard. When your yard is limited, and there is precious little space to build out, building up is another option. Adding another story to your home can give you the added square footage you need without losing your backyard space.
In this video, Marrokal Design & Remodeling literally raised the roof to add an entirely new story to this North Park home. The couple even lived in the home while the remodel was underway. Watch to see how their remodel room addition transformed their home and allowed them to stay in the house and neighborhood they love.
When you add your second story, you might also consider a roof-top garden like these homeowners did. It’s the perfect place to have a mini-garden if your lot doesn’t have room. Watch the video to see how Marrokal Design & Remodeling created a roof-top garden.
Building Out
Adding a family room or expanding a kitchen usually requires increasing the footprint of the ground floor. This will require a new foundation or slab so the news walls can be put into place. After that’s completed, the existing exterior walls will be opened to link the old and new spaces. This process is relatively easy to do and disrupts the current home the least. Building out, of course, means that you’ll lose some of your current yard space, but the livable space you gain is likely to make up for any loss.
Using big windows or doors that open wide to the outside help to create a seamless transition from the inside out, giving the home a more expansive feeling and allows the homeowner the ability to enjoy the outdoors even when inside.
